Part 2: Online Job-Search

Online Job Searching - Probably the most familiar method nowadays for finding job listings is through online job posting websites.

Remember — the quality of the listings is what matters, not necessarily the quantity!

It’s important to filter down your choices well and try to spend your time applying for the jobs with descriptions that match you best instead of applying for 100 “easy-apply” ones.

Popular Job Search Websites (international):

  • Linkedin
  • Indeed
  • Monster

Germany-Specific Websites:

  • Xing.de
  • Stellenangebote.de
  • Stepstone.de
  • Monster.de
  • get-in-it.de

Basic Steps of Online Job-Searching (via Linkedin):

  • Use job search engines by searching for keywords that match your interests. Use filters to narrow your results.
  • Utilize the “Set Alert” feature to save your search filters and stay on top of new jobs being posted!

Pro Strategy: Look for jobs on the same websites that companies use to recruit.

How to Find Job Applications on Recruiting Sites:

Search websites on Google in this format:
site:name_of_application_site | site:name_of_application_site | site:name_of_application_site

Target keywords for the applications you are looking for:
(data | scientist | analyst)

Add filters for keywords you do want it to include such as: “Junior”

and”react”

Add filters for keywords you don’t want it to include:

-senior -sr. -lead -“c++”

Add filters for when it was posted (to get the most recent ones):

after: 2022–08–01

Entire Sample Search String:

website: workable.com | lever.co | greenhouse.io | bamboohr.com (data | scientist | analyst) “react” “junior” -senior -sr. -lead -”c++” after:2022–08–01

Some Job Posting Websites to Use in your Search:

  • workable
  • lever.co
  • greenhouse.io
  • bamboohr.com
  • dover.io

Searching through this website makes it even easier: hiredlol.com

While online job postings are the most straightforward way to find out about open positions, it does have one major drawback — it’s much harder to stand out amidst such a large pool of applicants. When sending out online applications, make sure to:

  • Have a well crafted resume
  • Update any of your professional social media profiles (linkedin, github)
  • Send the hiring manager a quick message to let them know who you are and that you just applied to the position.
